Returning to Work and Home
After leaving the hospital, the process of integrating back into society and the community may be long and difficult. Individuals may encounter discrimination based on their disability and have difficulty finding and hiring an attorney. There also may be many financial considerations and concerns, since catastrophic injury is the greatest single financial threat to personal and family resources. Medical and rehabilitation treatment can be expensive and long-lasting and individuals with injuries and/or disabilities may have insufficient health insurance. It may also be difficult to find employment and some may even need to change careers due to their disability.
A family’s need for emotional, social, financial and legal support can be tremendous during this time. Fortunately, there are many organizations and support groups available to persons with disabilities and their families. It just takes time and patience to locate the right services.
