Pediatric Trauma Survivor Scholarship
2026 Awardee
The Trauma Survivors Network, a program of the American Trauma Society, is proud to announce the first awardee of the Pediatric Trauma Survivor Scholarship. This scholarship is designed to support young physical injury survivors as they build their futures. Our panel of reviewers have chosen as the first awardee, James Washington.
At just 16 years old, James’ life changed forever after being shot. His life was saved by the Trauma team at Cohen Children’s Medical Center, who supported him over months of surgeries and an even longer road to physical and emotional recovery.
Now 18, James is attending College of Staten Island pursing a nursing degree. Inspired by the doctors who gave him a second chance, he aspires to become a pediatric neurosurgeon. “I believe injury survivors must be included and heard in healthcare because we carry knowledge that cannot be taught in a classroom.”
Watch the video below to learn more about James and how his experience as a trauma survivor is shaping his plans for the future.
