UF Health Jacksonville

Jacksonville is a city-county consolidated government in Duval County.  It is the seventh most populous county and the largest in size in the United States at 918 sq miles.  The city is known as the River City with four bridges required to reach the city core from the west and south of the county and has fifteen miles of coastline.  The terrain is generally flat with a shallow water table.  Interstate 95 and 10 intersect in Duval County and are major transportation thoroughfares for the southeast United States.  NHTSA has named the stretch of I95 interstate from the Georgia line to St. Augustine as one of the most lethal stretches of highway in the country.  UF Health Jacksonville is home to the TraumaOne trauma program, the only state-approved adult and pediatric Level I trauma center in Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia – serving Nassau, Baker, St. Johns, and Clay County with a combined population of over 1.3 million citizens. University of Florida trauma surgeons and specially trained support staff are available to help severely injured patients 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The TraumaOne Trauma Center has five resuscitation bays allowing for immediate evaluation and resuscitation of injured patients by the Trauma One team. The UF Health TraumaOne program is widely recognized as one of the largest trauma programs in the nation, seeing almost 4,000 patients annually, of which about 2,500 are admitted.  Motor vehicle crashes, motorcycle crashes, falls, pedestrian and other accidents accounted for 74 percent of trauma cases last year.

The TraumaOne team is staffed by UF faculty surgeons, as well as nurses, paramedics, residents, fellows, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, psychologists and other support personnel who have had special training in the care of trauma patients and meet all educational requirements necessary to support a state approved Level I trauma center. This experienced and knowledgeable medical team is led by attending surgeons and provides care for each trauma patient from admission through discharge in order to maintain a continuity of care through his or her stay and return the injured patient to a healthy, productive life. The TraumaOne program is also supported by a high-tech 28-bed trauma intensive care unit for adults and an 8-bed pediatric intensive care unit for kids, both equipped with the latest lifesaving technology.
