Passive Range of Motion

Passive range of motion exercises are used when a person is unable to actively move a joint after injury or surgery. Joints are moved within a pain-free range by a physical therapist or by a machine to promote healing, decrease pain, and maintain mobility. Passive range of motion also decreases complications associated with immobilization by minimizing muscle contractures, maintaining muscle elasticity, and increasing blood flow.
