Signs and Symptoms

The essential criteria for diagnosing dysthymic disorder is that the depression has endured for at least two years, but the individual does not meet full criteria for major depressive disorder.

The specific symptoms associated with dysthymia include: 

  • Poor appetite or overeating
  • Insomnia or hypersomnia (i.e. excessive sleepiness or prolonged sleep)
  • Low energy or fatigue
  • Low self-esteem
  • Poor concentration or difficulty making decisions
  • Feelings of hopelessness
