Groups at Risk

Children younger than 4 years are at greatest risk of severe injury or death. In 2003, children younger than 4 years accounted for 79% of child maltreatment fatalities, with infants under 1 year accounting for 44% of deaths.

Infants

Infants cannot defend themselves against violence and are particularly vulnerable when abused. One form of such abuse is shaken-baby syndrome (SBS) which is a collection of signs and symptoms that the infant displays as the result of being violently shaken. SBS affects between 1,200 and 1,600 children every year. About 25% to 30% of these infants with SBS die from their injuries. Nonfatal consequences of SBS include varying degrees of visual impairment (e.g., blindness), motor impairment (e.g. cerebral palsy) and cognitive impairments.
