Fire Evacuation Plan

It is critical to have an evacuation plan in place before a fire emergency occurs. Taking time to plan a safe exit reduces the risk of family members becoming trapped or separated. Alternatives routes are necessary in case certain exits become blocked or inaccessible. Of particular importance is educating children about what to do in the case of a fire and practicing the plan with them at least twice a year. Always tell children to get out of the house and to stay out of the house, even if they were the ones who are responsible for the fire. Arrange a safe place to meet children once they have evacuated, such as a neighbor’s house. Planning a family disaster supplies kit may reduce the stresses involved with recovering from a fire. Items to include are spare car keys, copies of important documents, and drug prescriptions (www.nfpa.org).
