Fire Extinguishers

The National Fire Protection Association (www.nfpa.org) recommends using a fire extinguisher only when,“…the fire has been confined to a small area, such as a wastebasket, and is not growing; everyone has exited the building; the fire department has been called or is being called; and the room is not filled with smoke.” The NFPA also recommends installing extinguishers close to the exit and keeping your back to the exit way if you need to escape. To operate an extinguisher, review the instructions ahead of time.

It is not worth the risk of injury or death to attempt extinguishing a fire without knowledge about how a fire behaves and professional equipment. Even a fire fighter would not put out a fire without the appropriate gear and backup. The best fire prevention strategy is to know when to get out.
