Helmets

Helmets should be used at all times by children and adults when engaging in activities where a TBI could occur. This includes riding a bike or motorcycle; playing a contact sport such as football or ice hockey; using in-line skates or riding a skateboard; batting and running bases in baseball or softball; riding a horse; skiing or snowboarding. Adults are role models for children; therefore setting a good example is a form of teaching good child safety.

According to the Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute, a bicycle helmet reduces the risk of serious head and brain injury by 85%. Brain surgeons and doctors across the U.S. agree that wearing helmets can save lives. The Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute (www.bhsi.org) reports that 1 in 8 of the cyclists with reported injuries has a brain injury.
