My husband was a fire fighter at the busiest station in KC Mo and while at the scene of a fire sustained an electrical injury from a piece of equipment that remained in service despite many write ups that it would shock those who tried to use it. The one thing I thought I could always count on if he got injured or died on the job was that we would be taken care of by the city and the union. Not one person from management or the union ever contacted either of us to see if we needed anything. If it wasn’t for the men & women he served next to I don’t know where we would be. Due to the rare incidence of survivors who sustain a shock like he did it’s difficult for people to relate so they treat him like he is faking his injury. He looks perfectly “normal” on the outside but his brain and nerves have been effected. He is in constant pain. His doctors have been wonderful but they too are frustrated. We recently heard from the University of Chicago who specializes in these types of injuries saying they will except him as a patient. However, the city has fought us every step of the way regarding his treatment so this will be no different especially since the cost is so high. As a nurse and as a wife I have never felt more helpless, frustrated and angry. My husband feels betrayed, abandoned and useless.

I’m sorry to hear about this unfortunate accident, and the lack of compassion from these people. Pathetic. Has he tried acupuncture? It has saved me, so I always try to suggest it when I can. You may have already thought of this though.

Best,
Nichole

I am a Nurse also! Years ago when working in Intensive Care, I was injecting lidocaine into a patient & the patients AICD device went off at the same time. They say that you will not get an electrical currant into your own body from this device, when injecting lidocaine. Well when it went off, I felt an electrical currant travel all the way up my arm. Many years later to this day, I have numbness & tingling & weakness in my arm. I wonder now if this currant has caused me the permanent partial loss of my arm? I have alot of pain trying to use this arm to do anything to this day (many years later). Wonder if anyone else has had this happen & is having problems with there arm also?

Thank’s for explaining your experience! I am so sorry for what you are going thru. Just so you know, I am disabled for the last approximately 6-7 years (can’t remember off hand). I was also involved in a head-on accident in which I put my head through the windshield in 1980 (I am going to be 50 soon). Injuries to my brain progressed over the years & I am now disabled with severe head neuralgia. Live with constant pain in my head 24 hours a day. I’m on many medications to help control the pain. I’m living life as best as I can. I wish your husband well soon! Sincerely, Barb

I am an electrician who has been shocked many times. But, one time I took a 277 V shot down my left arm out through my belly. I was stuck to the machinery because the current made my hand clamp closed.
I have no idea how I finally let go, but I did. My arm hurt for a few days, then seemed fine. A month later I started having really bad pain in my left shoulder and arm. None of the docs could explain it or do anything for me. Then a friend of mine suggested I try acupuncture. I had 12 sessions over 3 months. All the pain completely went away. The treatment hurt a lot. Lots of electrical type shock pain from the needles. But it worked. That was 9 years ago. No pain since. Just a suggestion……..
