Women

Women are at a higher risk of becoming victims of IPV than men. Of reported cases of IPV in the National Crime Victimization Survey, 85% of IPV victims were women. Every three out of five women will be battered in their lifetime.

Young women and those below the poverty line are disproportionately victims of IPV. IPV varies among race with the prevalence of IPV being the highest for American Indian/Alaskan Native women and men, African-American women, and Hispanic women. Between 4% and 8% of pregnant women are abused at least once during the pregnancy, potentially causing a miscarriage or long term harm to the baby.
