Oncologist (Cancer)

An oncologist specializes in oncology, a medical subspecialty dealing with the study and treatment of cancer. There are three main types of oncologists, characterized by type of treatment: Surgical, Medical, and Radiation. Surgical oncologists specialize in tumor removal, medical oncologists handle medication and chemotherapy, and radiation oncologists specialize in the treatment of cancer with radiation. An oncologist is responsible for explaining the type and stage of the cancer, providing different treatment options, managing pain and symptoms, and coordinating comprehensive care, which may also involve physical therapy and counseling.
