Pulmonologist (Lung)

A pulmonologist specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the lungs and the respiratory tract. Medication is the most important treatment of most diseases of pulmonology, either by inhalation (bronchodilators and steroids) or in oral form (antibiotics, leukotriene antagonists). Oxygen therapy is often necessary in severe respiratory disease (emphysema and pulmonary fibrosis), and surgical treatment is generally performed by the (cardio)thoracic surgeon, after primary evaluation by a pulmonologist. Conditions managed by a pulmonologist include asthma, emphesema, chronic bronchitis, pneumonia, and sleep apnea. Pulmonologists in addition to other physicians, particularly ICU physicians, will often perform bronchoscopies. In a bronchoscopy, after a patient has been sedated, a camera is placed in a patient’s mouth and down his or her trachea so that the physician can look for damage or disease within the patient’s lungs
